The November 28th elections proved that
the Romanian democracy and society have fully matured
The Romanian President Mr. Ion Iliescu, appreciates the responsible and civilized way that the Romanian citizens expressed their electoral choices during the November 28th elections. These elections represent the victory of the European values and prove that the Romanian society and the Romanian democracy are fully mature.
The November 28th elections proved, once again, that the Romanian society is a pluralist one, a society that raises no objections on freedom of expression and freedom of choice. The existence of several vectors of electoral choice is a proof of normality and political pragmatism, a proof of the will to reach a political balance and achieve a better mutual control between the Power and the Opposition.
In the Romanian President's opinion, on November 28th the Romanians voted for the alert continuation of the reforms that are necessary in order that Romania joins the EU as well as for the strengthening of the positive economic trends, especially the ones regarding economic growth and improvement of the living standard.
Mr. Ion Iliescu sincerely congratulates the Romanian citizens for the maturity proven by using democratic political means to promote their interests.
Mr. Ion Iliescu appreciates the positive part played by the civil society's organizations both during the electoral campaign and the surveillance of this Sunday's poll. Though he has condemned some excesses and some of their actions that hadn't complied with democratic standards, the Romanian President appreciates their contribution to ensuring the normal course of elections and to affirming the European procedures in the matter.
On this occasion also, Romania proved to have understood the stakes of these elections, to have learned and respected the values of mature democracies, to have the will to become a respected and responsible member of the European and Euro-Atlantic community.
The Romanian President Mr. Ion Iliescu congratulates the newly elected Senators and Deputies and wishes them good luck in fulfilling the mandate that they have been entrusted with by the citizens, in full respect of the Constitution, national laws and national interest.
