Let's win the elections!

For a solidary society and the defense of the public interest

by Ms. Corina Cretu during the meeting of the Enlarged Council of
the Social Democratic Party - Bucharest Organization
- October 25, 2004 -

Ladies and gentlemen,

I see our reunion today as a family reunion; some of us haven't seen each other for a long time but, as any family, during the important moments of our life, we gather together to discuss our present and our future.
We are facing an extremely important moment, not only for our own future, but also for the future of our country. This is the decisive period before the parliamentary and presidential elections that we have to win and that we are going to win.

During the next period it is very important to be united and to pass the test of solidarity and common effort. Unless we do this, we won't be able to fulfill any durable achievements.
As I've already said, we are a family. As any family, we are also facing discontents. Though, when a family faces an important trial, any discontent is left aside and all its members join their efforts to face the problems and achieve their goal.

Our goal is now much more important than anything else, our goal is to win the presidential and parliamentary elections.
We are not entitled to and we have no reason to be weak or vulnerable. On the contrary, all arguments are in our favor, it is important that we keep on mentioning to the people and that we convince them that their vote is important, that we convince them to vote for Adrian Nastase as President and for the National Union PSD+PUR. For each one's benefit, for our benefit, for the country's benefit.

Nothing is earned without struggle in this life, but we have a reason to fight for. We are not struggling for keeping our privileges and portfolios, but for promoting the public interest, of those who are hardly and honestly working to earn their living.
It is true that one matter deserves to be defended: the results of the best governing of the last 15 years. It is an indisputable fact, all statistics show it as well as all comments of the international organizations. This rule led us to NATO membership and leads us to EU membership.

It is the rule that has made Romania respected and appreciated. It is the rule that has re-launched the national economy and brought the perspective for a substantial raise of the Romanians' living standards.
We have to continue the social projects for the people: the retired, the unemployed, the children and the youth, mono-parental families, the ones with many children but also the investors. I think we must do more for the mothers raising their children by themselves - a social category on which we must have a must closer approach and that I have an enormous respect for.
Let us we affirm, much stronger than ever, our left-centered, social-democratic ideological identity.
Let us promote our achievements, let us show what benefit we've brought to this country and to each citizen, let us address directly to the people and start a dialogue with them, let us show to everybody that results are in our favor.

Let us point out to the people another aspect: the quality of our candidates. The presence, on the top of our list, of Mr. Ion Iliescu for the Senate and of Mr. Adrian Nastase for President represent the a proof of our respect towards the people of Bucharest, a guarantee of our serious projects and programs.
President Iliescu is the guarantee of the balance and action in favor of the people, the man who is permanently seeking consensus and privileges dialogue. He is the man who had a deep influence on the last 15 years history, the politician's role model dedicated to serving the national interest.

Adrian Nastase is the guarantee that everything we've started 4 years ago is going to be finalized in 2007, the year of our joining the EU. He has all the necessary abilities to represent Romania, with dignity and professionalism, in front of our foreign partners. We can't afford any adventure, the Romanian President must be a source of balance rather that a source of tensions and conflicts.
The stake of these elections is our destiny as a country in the European and Euro-Atlantic nations environment.
We must win these elections in order to gain four years of development and prosperity, four years of internal stability and certitudes.

I believe in our final victory.
